The Bulldogs Original Five, better known as “The Five,” is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by the first five African American scholarship football players in the University of Georgia’s history: Richard Appleby, Horace King, Chuck Kinnebrew, Clarence Pope, and Larry West.
After integrating the UGA football team in the fall of 1971, the group went on to accomplish much on and off the field – each boasting a long-lasting legacy and successful post-college careers.
In 2021, the University of Georgia recognized The Bulldogs Original Five with a tribute at Reed Plaza. Building upon celebrating this 50-year milestone, the group formed a non-profit to bridge the gap between former and current students and student-athletes at the University of Georgia, in addition to high school students looking to be exposed to proven pathways to success.
The Bulldogs Original Five is on a mission to enhance the lives of opportunistic young people by introducing the fundamentals for success. Throughout its signature curriculum and programming, The Bulldogs Original Five helps students and student-athletes thrive during and after college.
Our programs promote and improve excellence in education, healthy lifestyles, and community enrichment with a committed interest to make a positive impact in opportunistic young peoples’ lives throughout Clarke County, Georgia, and beyond.
